Sets play divides a lawn bowls match into shorter contests. Instead of relying only on the final shot total across the whole game, a player or team must win sets—and may need a tie-break to win the match.
How a standard sets match works
The World Bowls Laws of the Sport describe two sets, normally of nine ends each, although the controlling body can agree another format in advance. The player or team with the higher shot total at the end of the set wins that set. If the shot totals are level, the set is drawn.
How the match is won
Winning both sets wins the match. Winning one set and drawing the other also produces a match winner. If each side wins one set, or if both sets are drawn, the match goes to a tie-break.
How the tie-break works
Under the standard law, the tie-break consists of three ends and is decided by the total shots scored across those ends. If the total is still level after the third end, a fourth end is played; further ends continue until a winner is found. Some domestic events use a shorter tie-break in their conditions of play, so read the event sheet.
Who plays first?
A coin toss decides the first player in the opening set. The winner of the first set starts the second; if that set was drawn, the winner of its last scoring end starts. A fresh toss applies at the beginning of the tie-break and again at the fourth or any later tie-break end.
Why the tactics feel different
A poor first set does not create an impossible match deficit: a team can reset, win the second and reach the tie-break. Conversely, a large shot margin in one set does not carry forward as a second-set advantage. Track set position, shots and ends remaining before deciding whether to protect, draw or attack.
Check the conditions of play
Event organisers may vary the number of ends, time limits, re-spot rules and tie-break structure. The published conditions of play are part of the competition, not an optional extra.
Keep both score layers visible
A digital scorecard should make the current set and the match position easy to read. WGTS supports clear match tracking and camera-assisted measurement on compatible devices. Try WGTS for iPhone or WGTS for Android.
