Lawn bowls and bocce share a simple goal: finish closer to a small target ball than the other side. The way each game reaches that goal is strikingly different.

The short answer

Lawn bowls uses biased bowls that curve on a smooth green. Bocce uses round balls without built-in bias, usually on a shorter prepared court. That equipment difference shapes almost every tactical choice.

Equipment: bowls, balls, jack and pallino

A lawn bowl is slightly asymmetrical and has a bias. Grip rings and emblems help the player orient it. The target is called the jack.

A bocce ball is spherical and intended to travel without a built-in curve. The smaller target ball is usually called the pallino. Bocce sets commonly use strongly contrasting colours.

Playing surface

Lawn bowls is played on a large, carefully maintained grass or synthetic green divided into rinks. Bocce is commonly played on a narrower court made from compacted stone, clay or another prepared material, although social games can use a lawn.

Delivery and movement

In lawn bowls, the player rolls from a mat and aims away from the target so the bias curves back. Weight changes both distance and the amount of turn.

In bocce, players roll or toss a round ball towards the pallino. Bank shots, blocking and contact still matter, but there is no built-in bias to read.

How scoring compares

Both games award points based on proximity to the target after all bowls or balls have been played. The exact match structure, number of ends or target score depends on the code and competition.

Strategy

  • Lawn bowls: choose forehand or backhand, read the bias and green pace, and plan curved routes around the head.

  • Bocce: control direct placement, use the court boundaries when permitted, and decide when to point or strike.

Can you use bocce balls for lawn bowls?

No. The equipment behaves differently and formal lawn bowls requires approved biased bowls. A bocce set will not produce the curved delivery that defines bowls.

Which game should you try?

Choose bocce if you want a portable social game that can work on a compact court or casual surface. Choose lawn bowls if you enjoy precise weight, curved trajectories, changing green conditions and club competition. Plenty of people enjoy both.
