A bowling club should feel welcoming to spectators. A few simple habits protect concentration and let everyone enjoy a close end.

Stay outside the playing area

World Bowls law 45 says spectators and others not directly taking part must stay outside the green’s boundaries and clear of players. If a section of green is assigned to spectators, stay outside the rinks of play and give players room to move.

Let the players make the call

Do not coach from the bank or announce that one bowl is shot before the players agree. Law 45 says spectators must not disturb or advise players. A confident shout can confuse a delivery or a close measurement.

Choose a safe moment to talk

Wait until both bowls have stopped and the players are moving between ends to ask questions or congratulate a shot. Keep phone sound off and avoid standing in a player’s line of sight at the mat.

Help newcomers feel included

Explain basic words such as jack, end and shot quietly away from active play. Cheer effort and sportsmanship from the designated viewing area. If you are unsure where to stand, ask a club volunteer.

Watch closely, speak at the right moment, and leave the decision to the players.
