Jack length is one of the few conditions a player can deliberately change from end to end. The best choice is not always the length you personally like most; it is the length that gives your side the clearest repeatable advantage.
Begin with a legal, repeatable delivery
Under the World Bowls Laws of the Sport, the jack must finish at least 23 metres from the mat line after centring in standard play, while mat placement also creates a maximum available length. Domestic rules or event conditions may alter procedures, so verify them before the match.
When a shorter jack can help
A shorter length may suit players with a soft, controlled delivery and can punish opponents who repeatedly run through. It can also make position bowls beyond the jack harder to judge. The risk is that a compact head may offer more movement from a firm shot.
When a longer jack can help
A long jack can test an opponent's ability to maintain weight and often rewards bowls that finish rather than fade short. It may suit a team comfortable with full-length draws. The trade-off is greater sensitivity to changing pace, headwind and fatigue.
Why medium length remains useful
A medium jack is not a passive choice. It gives a team a stable reference when the green is changing and lets the lead focus on repeatability. Use it when your side is building pressure through consistent first bowls rather than trying to surprise the opponent.
Match the length to the conditions
Wind, moisture, shade and direction can make the same nominal length play differently. Watch the trial ends, compare both directions and change one variable at a time. A length change is most useful when the team knows why it is being made.
Avoid becoming predictable
Keep a successful length while it is producing good heads, but have a planned alternative. A deliberate switch after losing several ends can disrupt an opponent's rhythm; random changes can disrupt your own team just as easily.
Record the evidence
Note the length, direction and result rather than relying on memory alone. WGTS offers digital scorekeeping and camera-assisted measurement on compatible devices. Try WGTS for iPhone or WGTS for Android.
Coaching note: choose lengths around the abilities of the players delivering them, and follow the skip's agreed match plan in team play.
