One of bowls’ superpowers is adaptability. The pace is social, the target is shared and the game can accommodate a wide range of movement, sensory and communication needs. Inclusion, however, does not happen simply because a sport can be adapted. Clubs make it real through preparation and respect.
Ask before you assist
No two players need the same support. Ask the person what works for them, listen to the answer and speak directly to the player rather than only to a companion. Bowls England’s guidance for hearing impairments makes the same essential point: communication preferences differ and support should adapt accordingly.
Equipment can open the rink
Approved aids can include purpose-designed bowls wheelchairs, bowling arms, delivery supports and assistance for visually impaired bowlers. The World Bowls Laws also cover players with disabilities and how approved equipment or assistants interact with play. For formal competition, confirm the current rules, classifications and equipment approvals with the relevant national authority and event organiser.
Design the welcome, not just the ramp
- Publish accessible contact details and invite players to discuss requirements before arrival.
- Make parking, entrances, toilets, seating and paths to the green easy to understand.
- Offer a quieter arrival time for anyone who prefers less sensory load.
- Use clear demonstrations, plain language and enough time to practise.
- Give volunteers a named inclusion contact so questions have an owner.
Keep the person in control
Support should increase independence, not take over. A useful helper describes options, confirms consent and waits for direction. If an adjustment affects the Laws or the surface, involve the umpire or controlling body early so the player is not placed in an awkward position at the mat.
An inclusive club does more than remove barriers. It sends a confident message: you belong in the team, your game matters and the green is better with you on it.
