A matched set of bowls is built for years of play, but grit, moisture and careless storage can make the surface feel inconsistent long before the bowls are worn out. A five-minute routine after each game is usually enough.

After every session

  1. Brush away loose grit. Sand and dirt trapped under a cloth can create fine scratches, so remove it before rubbing the surface.

  2. Wipe each bowl. Use a clean, soft microfibre cloth, paying attention to the grip rings and emblem recesses.

  3. Dry completely. Do not close damp bowls inside the bag. Moisture encourages odour and can affect accessories and zips.

  4. Check for damage. Look for a new chip, a sharp edge or a loose emblem before the next match.

How to wash lawn bowls

For a deeper clean, follow the bowl manufacturer's instructions. A common gentle method is lukewarm water, a small amount of mild washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. Avoid very hot water, harsh solvents, abrasive pads and anything that can attack the finish or coloured emblems.

Rinse away residue and dry each bowl immediately. A soft brush can lift dirt from the grip without scratching the surrounding surface.

Should you polish your bowls?

A small amount of an appropriate bowls polish can improve feel and appearance, but more is not better. Buff away residue so the bowl is secure in the hand rather than slippery.

Check the venue before using wax or grip products. Some synthetic surfaces restrict products that can transfer to the carpet and build up over time. Club guidance and manufacturer instructions should take priority.

Store them properly

  • Keep each bowl in its own compartment so the set does not knock together.

  • Store the bag in a cool, dry place with airflow.

  • Avoid leaving bowls for long periods in a hot car or direct sunlight.

  • Clean the bag occasionally so old grit does not return to the bowls.

  • Keep chalk, measures and cloths in separate pockets where possible.

Do not change the playing surface

Normal cosmetic marks are part of use. Do not sand, machine or reshape a bowl yourself. Competition bowls must continue to meet the applicable stamp and set requirements. If a bowl is damaged, ask the manufacturer, a licensed tester or your club for advice.
