A strong four does not need four skips. It needs four players who understand what their position gives the team. World Bowls defines the order as lead, second, third and skip; the magic comes from how those roles connect.
Lead: draw the map
The lead places the mat, delivers and centres the jack, then aims to establish useful bowls near the target. A reliable lead gives the team options. Jack-high bowls can score immediately; bowls just behind the jack can become insurance if the head moves.
Second: strengthen the story
The second responds to the opening head. That may mean drawing another counter, covering a danger area or playing with controlled weight. In many club settings the second also helps keep the scorecard or scoreboard current. Attention between deliveries matters as much as the delivery itself.
Third: translate tactics into action
The third often handles the widest range of shots. They may draw, trail the jack, rest a bowl, add cover or attack. The third can advise the skip and, under the Laws, is responsible for agreeing shots scored with the opposing third and measuring when needed—unless those duties are transferred as allowed.
Skip: own the plan
The skip has sole charge of the team under the Laws. They direct play, manage risk and deliver the final bowls when the head is most developed. That authority works best with calm communication: a clear hand, a clear weight and a clear reason.
Make the rink feel like one player
- Share useful information, not a running commentary.
- Commit to the called shot once you step onto the mat.
- Watch every bowl; it may reveal pace or a changing line.
- Reset after a poor end instead of carrying it down the rink.
- Celebrate the role that created the opportunity, not only the bowl that finished it.
Positions are responsibilities, not rankings. When each player does the job in front of them, the team gains something much bigger than four individual performances: a head built on purpose.
