Second-hand lawn bowls can be an excellent first set, but value depends on fit, condition and whether all four bowls genuinely belong together. Use this ten-point check before paying.

1. Try the size and grip

Hold the bowl in your normal delivery grip. You should control it without squeezing, wrist strain or fear of dropping it. If possible, deliver several bowls on both hands.

2. Confirm there are four matching bowls

Compare colour, model, grip pattern and engraving. A case containing four similar-looking bowls is not necessarily a matched set.

3. Match every serial number

The serial number should be the same on all four. This is a key requirement for a set under the World Bowls definitions.

4. Read the official stamp

Check that the stamp is legible and suitable for the level of play you intend. Requirements can differ between casual and competition bowls, so confirm with your club or national authority.

5. Inspect chips and cracks

Look under bright light and rotate every bowl. Cosmetic scratches are common; cracks, deep chips or damage near the running surface need expert advice.

6. Compare the running surfaces

Uneven wear can affect confidence even when it is not obvious on the table. Ask to roll the full set on a green and watch whether the bowls finish consistently.

7. Understand the bias

Model names alone do not tell you how a used set will behave on your local surface. Try the bowls at realistic lengths and ask a coach to watch the line.

8. Check the grip suits you

Deep dimples, rings and plain grips feel very different. Choose control in wet or dry hands rather than appearance.

9. Inspect the case

A secure case protects the set. Broken dividers, failed zips or damp storage add replacement cost and can hide a poor care history.

10. Price the whole package

Allow for testing, re-stamping, a new case or cleaning. Use the World Bowls tester directory when professional advice is needed.
