Accessible lawn bowls starts with asking each player what helps, then making the ordinary club experience easier to navigate. The sport already supports approved wheelchairs, delivery aids, visual assistance and other adaptations; good communication and thoughtful routines remove many barriers before special arrangements are needed.

1. Make the route to the rink obvious

Keep paths level, well lit and free of bowls bags. Identify step-free access, suitable toilets, parking and a stable place to sit before the session begins.

2. Provide equipment at a comfortable height

Use trolleys, lifters or racks so players are not forced to bend repeatedly. Place mats and jacks where they can be reached without rushing.

3. Support approved delivery aids

Bowling arms and other artificial devices can help people with physical restrictions continue to deliver safely. Approval and use rules vary, so check the national authority and event conditions. Bowls England's disability guidance links to current equipment and player-support information.

4. Give instructions in more than one way

Combine spoken directions with demonstration, pointing and written summaries. Face the player, reduce background noise and ask how they prefer to communicate.

5. Leave room around the head

Keep bags, measures and feet away from the decision area. A clear approach helps wheelchair users, players with balance concerns and anyone using an assistant.

6. Reduce unnecessary bending to compare shots

A phone held at a comfortable height can give the group an overhead view of the jack and bowls. WGTS is a gameplay aid for shared understanding; official decisions still follow the required measure and umpire procedure.

7. Let the player control the help

Ask before touching a wheelchair, delivery aid, phone or bowls. Assistance should increase independence, not take the task away.

8. Build flexibility into the session

Offer rest, extra orientation time and a quieter rink when useful. The goal is a good game, not making every player follow the same route to it.
